Part 2 of the Most Significant Moldavite Facts

Does moldavite alter in hue with time?

If submerged in water, moldavites will deteriorate and eventually disintegrate. It is crucial that you avoid immersing it in water and keep it away from impacts, abrasions, and other things that could speed up its deterioration. If you leave it alone, wear it infrequently, and carefully store it while not in use, it won't likely fade or change color. Others assert that it will change color slightly based on your mood if you use it for spiritual purposes.

Where is the origin of moldavite?

It is currently mined in the Czech Republic, most specifically on the Bohemian Plateau. 275 tons are thought to be the total amount of moldavite in the world.

How can I tell a moldavite is fake?

Three grades are assigned to moldavite:

- excellent, also referred to as museum grade

- Medium caliber

- Grade Standard

All three classes can be distinguished by their appearance. The green hue of the pieces in the regular grade is typically deeper and more saturated, and the surface may have closely spaced pitting or weathering.

The following qualities can be used to spot a phony Moldavite:

1. Colour

Moldavite typically has a forest-green hue and resembles dark green glass in appearance thanks to its rough edges and surface. They can be various hues of green, and depending on the thickness, they may appear black in daylight.

2. Price

If you see a 20-gram Moldavite selling for $80 the next time, the likelihood that it is fake is very high because a 10-gram Moldavite will typically cost approximately USD200 and up and won't sell for simply a double-digit amount.

3. Location

There have been discoveries of moldavite in four separate countries. In the Czech Republic, where more than 99 percent of the Moldavite is found, are the main reserves. Among the others are Germany, northern Austria, and southwestern Poland. Moldavites should typically come from the Czech Republic, only one nation. The Moldavite is 100 percent false if it is mined somewhere else than the Czech Republic or if it is labeled as manufactured.

4. Online

Do keep in mind that there is a higher chance that fake Moldavites will be sold on dubious websites like eBay, Etsy, and AliExpress. Moldavite is a tiny mineral with an average weight of 4 grams. This often weighs about the same as a little coin.

More than 20 grams of moldavite is regarded as uncommon and can cost several hundred dollars, while more than 40 grams of moldavite can cost thousands of dollars. Watch out for wholesalers of crystal that sell Moldavite that is too large for the price. If you see moldavite above 30 grams, use caution and, if necessary, seek guidance from the crystals wholesaler. Moldavite beyond 30 grams is rarely sold on the internet.
